Radha and Krishna
The eternal pair whose love is worshipped as the highest form of devotion.
Radha of Barsana is worshipped not as a consort but as Krishna's own energy of love — which is why devotees greet each other with 'Radhe Radhe' and place her name before his.
Their story is one of meetings by the Yamuna, of quarrels and reconciliation, and above all of viraha, the ache of separation after Krishna left Braj for Mathura and never returned as the boy she knew.
Saints such as Jayadeva, Chandidas, Mirabai and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu made this longing the heart of the bhakti movement across India.
