The Lifting of Govardhan

Krishna asked the people of Braj to worship the hill that fed their cattle instead of performing the yearly sacrifice to Indra. They agreed, and Indra, insulted, sent the clouds of universal dissolution.

For seven days and nights the rain fell. Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on the little finger of his left hand, and the entire village — men, women, children, cows — sheltered beneath it, untouched.

Indra relented and came to beg forgiveness, bathing Krishna with the milk of the celestial cow and naming him Govinda, protector of cows.
