History & significance
Madhvacharya, founder of the Dvaita school, is said to have received the idol from a sinking ship's ballast of gopichandana clay.
When the devotee Kanakadasa was barred entry for his caste, the deity is believed to have turned around and the wall cracked open — that opening is the Kanakana Kindi, the window through which all now take darshan.
Eight monasteries take turns administering the temple in the two-yearly Paryaya festival.
