Guruvayur Temple

History & significance
The idol is said to have been worshipped by Krishna's parents and installed here by Guru Brihaspati and Vayu — hence Guru-vayu-ur.
The poet Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri composed the Narayaneeyam here in 1586 while seeking relief from illness.
The temple maintains a famous elephant sanctuary at Punnathurkotta, home to dozens of donated temple elephants.
