Ujjain & Dwarka

Sandipani's School and Sudama's Rice

Krishna the student, and the friendship with a poor brahmin that became the model of grace.

Krishna and Balarama studied under sage Sandipani at Ujjain, mastering the Vedas, arts and weapons in sixty-four days. As guru-dakshina Krishna restored the teacher's drowned son from the realm of death.

His fellow student Sudama grew old in poverty. Urged by his wife, he walked to Dwarka carrying a small bundle of beaten rice, ashamed of so poor a gift.

Krishna ran to the gate to embrace him, seated him on his own throne, and ate the rice with delight. Sudama returned home to find his hut transformed into a mansion — he had never asked for anything.
